At the Devon Fudge Company we are 100% behind the fact that not all treats have to be naughty...

Your favourite fudge treats are good for you and the environment too. We're so proud to say that all of our fudge flavours are palm oil free, hooray!

You might be thinking, and? What does that mean? Palm oil is used in many food products, it is an edible vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees. So what makes using it in food a bad thing?

The WWF says ' Palm oil has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. This forest loss coupled with conversion of carbon rich peat soils are throwing out millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. There also remains some exploitation of workers and child labour. These are serious issues that the whole palm oil sector needs to step up to address because it doesn’t have to be this way'.

So, just in case you need anymore persuasion to give our fudge a try, here's 5 reasons why we're proud to be palm oil free.

1. As far as we are aware, we are the only fudge manufacturer in the UK that is completely palm oil free. We think this is really something to shout about! Next time you're on your weekly food shop you'll be surprised at just how many of your favourite brands use palm oil in their list of ingredients...

2. Whilst we are a tiny fish in the grand scheme of things, as a small business we are still doing our part in fighting this widespread problem which is causing mass rainforest destruction. Small steps can make big changes.

3.There are conflicting studies about the health benefits of palm oil. Whilst palm oil isn't as unhealthy as trans fats, it's better to use healthier cooking oils in food preparation.

4. We're proud to be among many major worldwide brands that have chosen to ditch palm oil in their food production including Ben & Jerry's, Divine Chocolate and Warburton's bread.

5. When you choose our fudge, we always do a happy dance! What better feeling to be indulging in something that is practically guilt free too. Enjoy the little things in life with the knowledge that you're helping the environment too in choosing a food product that is 100% palm oil free.
